A coalition of Greenville’s leading food security organizations has come together to ensure that children across the county have access to nutritious meals all summer long. Through the Summer Break Café program as well as a partnership between Feed & Seed Co., LiveWell Greenville, and Loaves & Fishes, children are receiving not only free breakfasts and lunches but also fresh produce boxes to take home.
The Summer Break Café, administered by the South Carolina Department of Education and funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, launched its 2026 summer meal service on May 27, 2026. The program provides free meals to all children 18 and under, Monday through Thursday, at participating sites throughout Greenville County through July 30, 2026.
To build on this essential service, Feed & Seed Co. and LiveWell Greenville have so far donated more than 300 boxes of fresh, locally sourced produce for distribution at Summer Break Café locations. Loaves & Fishes is supporting the effort by delivering the produce boxes directly to meal sites, ensuring that children receive both a nutritious meal on-site and fresh fruits and vegetables to take home.
“Access to healthy food shouldn’t stop when school lets out,” said Nathaniel McCrary, director of Operations for Loaves & Fishes. “We are working together to make sure children across Greenville have the nourishment they need to thrive all summer long.”
Families visiting Summer Break Café locations receive:
• A free breakfast or lunch for every child 18 and under
• A box of fresh produce filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables (while supplies last)
Hours and offerings vary by location, and families are encouraged to review full details before visiting. A complete list of Summer Break Café locations can be found by visiting https://livewellgreenville.org/greenville-county-food-resources/ and selecting the tab for Free Summer Meals for Kids in the search bar which accompanies a map of food resource locations.
This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to addressing food insecurity in Greenville County — especially during the summer months, when many families lose access to school-based meal programs.
“Pairing Summer Break Cafe with a box of fresh, locally grown produce offerings, helps ease the financial strain many families face during the summer months. The free produce boxes give families access to healthy fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers and strengthening Greenville's local food system,” said Mary Hipp, board chair of Feed & Seed.
Executive Director of LiveWell Greenville, Sally Wills, adds “No single organization can solve food insecurity alone. This partnership with Loaves & Fishes and Feed & Seed Co. is an example of what Greenville nonprofits do best: we see the need and come together to fill in gaps."
